Meredith and I went to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo on Wednesday, something I’ve been wanting to do since I moved here in 2008 but never got around to doing because of my crippling social anxiety and just being crippled in general the past few years. I’ve finally recovered from my anxiety, though! Never completely, of course, but considerably enough that I can function and actually enjoy going out and experiencing life.
However, I’m not able to walk far enough to make it through the zoo without intense pain in my lower back that I just can’t handle, so I was in my wheelchair for our zoo adventure… and poor Meredith, the zoo is all hills, I felt so bad about it. She is going to have an amazing ass of steel, though, that’s for sure.
It was a lot of fun, even though we didn’t get to see any sloths, which was disappointing because We LOVE SLOTHS. SLOTHS ARE AWESOME, OKAY? I’m actually a three-toed sloth on the days that I’m not a chihuahua.
Here is an imgur album full of photos that I took that day! Cute animals, yay! I’m sorry that many are blurry… I used the action setting on my phone, but between the animals moving and the slight tremors in my arms, well, I have a really hard time taking photos that are really clear!
I’m really glad that we went, and that it didn’t end up raining on us since it was threatening to and started to drizzle a bit! We also went to the Spy Museum, but this was a lot more enjoyable in my opinion.
The day started out with me getting approved to use MetroAccess, which is a shuttle service for those with disabilities in the metro D.C. area that will pick me up from my apartment and take me anywhere that the metro lines would reach, running at the same hours that the metro does, as long as I schedule a day in advance. So I’ll have a bit more independence, not needing to burden Meredith so much, since she’s been the one who has had to drive me everywhere because I can’t drive and can’t get out to the bus station on my own.
All in all, Wednesday was a damn good day!
